Why We Travel With Homemade Food

(And Why It Makes Every Trip Better)

One of the questions we get asked most often is:

"Do you really bring your own food when you travel?"

The answer is almost always... yes.

Whether we're heading out for a weekend camping trip, loading up the RV, or taking a road trip through the mountains, you'll almost always find a cooler packed with homemade meals, healthy snacks, and enough coffee to make our mornings feel like home.

Some people assume it's about saving money.

While that's certainly a nice bonus, it isn't the main reason.

For us, traveling with homemade food gives us something even more valuable: freedom.

We Spend Less Time Looking for Food

Have you ever been on a beautiful drive only to realize everyone is hungry?

Suddenly you're searching for restaurants, reading reviews, waiting for a table, and spending an hour eating when you'd rather be exploring.

Packing our own meals means we eat when we're hungry—not when it's convenient for a restaurant.

We've enjoyed lunches overlooking mountain lakes, picnics beside hiking trails, and simple dinners at campsites with views no restaurant could ever match.

Those are the meals we remember.

We Feel Better

Road trips can quickly turn into a weekend of fast food, oversized portions, and too much sugar.

After a day or two, we always notice the difference.

We have less energy, don't sleep as well, and never feel our best.

Bringing homemade food lets us stick with the meals we normally enjoy at home—high-protein breakfasts, fresh fruit, vegetables, simple sandwiches, homemade soups, grilled chicken, pasta salads, and healthy snacks.

We're not trying to eat perfectly.

We're simply trying to avoid feeling miserable halfway through vacation.

We Save More Than Money

Restaurant meals add up quickly.

Breakfast for two.

Lunch.

Dinner.

Coffee stops.

Snacks.

Before long, you've spent hundreds of dollars without realizing it.

Packing food ahead of time means we can choose when we want to splurge instead of feeling like every meal has to come from a restaurant.

That leaves more room in the travel budget for experiences we'll actually remember.

It Makes Travel Less Stressful

One of my favorite parts of travel is slowing down.

Coffee outside the RV.

Lunch at a scenic overlook.

A charcuterie board by the lake.

Those simple moments become part of the adventure.

When food is already prepared, there's no debating where to eat or worrying about finding something healthy.

Everything is ready when we are.

We Still Love Local Restaurants

Traveling with homemade food doesn't mean we never eat out.

In fact, we love discovering local coffee shops, breweries, bakeries, and restaurants.

Those experiences are part of why we travel.

The difference is that we get to choose the meals that matter most.

Instead of eating out three times a day, we'll often enjoy homemade breakfasts and lunches, then treat ourselves to a memorable local dinner.

It feels more intentional—and honestly, we appreciate those special meals even more.

Our Favorite Travel Foods

Some of the foods you'll usually find in our cooler include:

  • Protein-packed breakfast burritos

  • Pasta salad

  • Grilled chicken

  • Fresh fruit

  • Cut vegetables

  • Cheese and crackers

  • Homemade sandwiches

  • Hard-boiled eggs

  • Greek yogurt

  • Trail mix

  • Plenty of water and sparkling water

  • Fresh coffee for the morning

Simple foods travel surprisingly well and make busy travel days much easier.

Travel Should Feel Good

As we've gotten older, we've realized that travel isn't about checking attractions off a list.

It's about creating days that feel relaxed, healthy, and memorable.

Packing homemade food is one small habit that helps us do exactly that.

It saves money, reduces stress, keeps us feeling our best, and gives us more time enjoying the places we came to see.

For us, that's what traveling well is really about.

How about you? Are you someone who packs a cooler before every trip, or do you enjoy discovering restaurants along the way? I'd love to hear your favorite travel food in the comments.

Our Favorite Products for Eating Better on the Road

Over the years, we've found a handful of products and services that make traveling with homemade food simple. These are the items we reach for again and again because they help us eat healthier, waste less, and enjoy the journey a little more.

Some of the links above are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products and services that we've personally used, tested, or chosen because they've earned a place in our everyday life.

Air Fryer

Whether we're cooking at home before a trip or making dinner in the RV, our air fryer gets used constantly. It's perfect for cooking protein, roasting vegetables, reheating leftovers, and making quick, healthy meals with very little cleanup.

Travel Cooler

A dependable cooler is one of the best investments we've made for road trips. It lets us pack several days' worth of homemade meals, fresh fruit, drinks, and snacks so we aren't relying on convenience stores or fast food.

Reusable Ice Packs

Good ice packs make all the difference. We use long-lasting reusable ice packs to keep our cooler cold for hours, helping our meals stay fresh throughout the day.

Reusable Freezer Bags

These have become one of our favorite meal prep tools. We portion meals, freeze leftovers, organize snacks, and pack ingredients for road trips—all while reducing single-use plastic.

Coffee Maker

One of our favorite travel traditions is enjoying a great cup of coffee before the day begins. Whether we're parked at a campground or watching the sunrise from a cabin deck, having our own coffee maker means the day starts exactly how we like it.

Coffee Grinder

Freshly ground beans make every cup taste better. A compact grinder lets us enjoy café-quality coffee no matter where we're traveling.

Coffee Beans

We almost always pack our favorite locally roasted coffee beans. It's a simple luxury that makes mornings on the road feel a little more like home.

Coffee Creamer

Having our favorite creamer in the cooler means we don't have to settle for whatever happens to be available at a gas station. It's one of those little comforts that makes travel feel more enjoyable. We are loving this and the ingredient list is actually something you can understand which is important! (lots of fun flavors - cinnamon is our favorite)

Wild Alaska Seafood

One of our goals has been eating more seafood, and Wild Alaska makes that easy. Having high-quality fish delivered means our freezer is always stocked with healthy protein that's ready for meal prep before our next adventure.

Good Chop

Keeping quality meat in the freezer makes meal planning much easier. We can prepare meals ahead of time, portion them for travel, and always have protein ready without making extra trips to the grocery store.

The Farmer's Dog

Winston travels almost everywhere with us, so eating well isn't just important for us—it's important for him, too. We portion his meals ahead of each trip, making feeding time easy whether we're camping, road-tripping, or staying in the RV.
